Often confused with the Siberian Husky is the Alaskan Malamute. They are very similar in appearance however the Malamute has some distinguishing characteristics. Foremost is their size. While the Siberian Husky stands 21-23.5 inches at the shoulders and weighs 45-60 pounds, the Alaskan Malamute stands 25 inches at the shoulder and can weigh up to 95 pounds. They are heavy boned and their musculature is substantially larger than that of the Husky. If you compare the pictures below, you can see the heavier bone structure and musculature of the Malamute.
Alaskan Malamutes are one of the oldest arctic breeds and are a descendant of the Arctic wolf. Developed by the Mahlemut Eskimos of Alaska, these hearty animals were bred to carry heavy loads in harsh winter climates and have tremendous endurance. These dogs were the only means of transportation for the Eskimos and were highly valued. They were essential to tribe survival.
These dogs have a tremendous amount of strength and heart. I currently have 2 of these magnificent animals and its debatable "who walks who!" Chinook is a 6 year old male
and Ninah is my 6 year old female. Their personalities are as different as their looks. He is mischievous, loves balls and squeaky toys, and has his moments when he needs to be left alone. She is interested in none of the above, hates to be alone even for a short time, and loves to be loved. We rescued her from the Humane Society and she is still showing her appreciation 3 years later. Believe it or not, someone boarded her and never came back for her. It was later discovered to be a classic case of "what a cute puppy, I have to have her." The owner failed to properly research the breed and realized after the fact that she wasn't a good fit with their home.
Please do your research before considering a Husky or Malamute as a pet. As I've said many times, these are truly magnificent animals but they do require a bit more maintenance and upkeep than some are prepared for. Since you've found your way to our website, you're off to a good start.
Aside from the few physical characteristics that differentiate the Alaskan Malamute from the Siberian Husky, the breeds are quite similar. My Huskies and Malamutes get along great together. Perhaps you saw the movie "Eight Below?" That team of dogs had 2 Malamutes. One final distinction, blue eyes are for Huskies alone. They are considered a fault in the Standard of the Malamute breed.
